Komat'su
are committed to finding environmentally friendly solutions
that satisfy all of our customers. As part of these efforts,
we actively pursue technological innovations that reduce
diesel emissions and minimize fuel requirements.
Clean, Environmentally Friendly
Engine
(1)
Technology to control emissions from diesel engines for
use in portable generators, construction and industrial
equipment
Using cast iron pistons and an electronically
controlled, high-pressure fuel injection system, Komatsu
has developed an ideal method of fuel combustion. We have
also developed a variety of measures-such as integrating
air-to-air aftercoolers into our engines-to meet the stringent
Tier II emission regulations in the United States, which
took effect in 2001.
(2) Controlling Emissions in Stationary
Generators
The water emulsified system has
revolutionized diesel engines by enabling considerable reductions
in NOx and by virtually eliminating exhaust smoke, without
necessitating a cumbersome processing unit. Diesel generators
can now be used in metropolitan centers, because they conform
to standards that were previously impossible to meet.
Durability and Reliability
Komatsu engines for generator use have
extended the time between overhauls (TBO) to an outstanding
16,000 hours.

(1) FCD
Pistons
Our high-speed diesel engines
were the first to incorporate ductile cast iron FCD pistons.
The material is not only stronger, but also offers greater
durability and resistance to high temperatures than do ordinary
aluminum pistons.
2) Cylinder Liners
To increase the wear resistance of cylinder liners, we have
developed a Tufftride treatment that, in addition to our
special honing method, increases lubricity and significantly
enhances surface durability.

(3) Roller Tappets
Roller tappet system increases durability by reducing friction
between tappets and cams; this is the first class of engine
to employ them. The roller tappet system has higher reliability
compared to conventional tappet & cam type.
